BANCROFTIAN FILARIASIS: A PSYCHOSOCIAL AND POLITICAL PERSPECTIVE FOR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS.

ABSTRACT
The political and psychosocial importance of bancroftian filariasis
were reviewed and also xamined based upon the authors’
own experiences in assisting patients at the Center for Teaching,
Research and Tertiary Referral for Bancroftian Filariasis (NEPAF – HC/Federal University of Pernambuco– Brazil). The subject was
emphasized and discussed under a holistic approach enlightening
the transdisciplinary of the peculiar characteristic of the patients’
needs. When aware of the issues most commonly faced by patients,
health care professionals (e.g., physicians, nurses, social workers,
dietitians, psychologists, physiotherapists and health educators)
across a broad spectrum of disciplines are at a distinct advantage
to contribute to the improvement of a patient’s quality of life.
